Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
A Statement From Our DirectorDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion at FB Meekins Cooperative Preschool
Since Meekins opened in 1964, we have embraced the cooperative preschool model, where families and staff work together to create a nurturing and enriching learning environment. We know firsthand that our strength lies in the diverse backgrounds, perspectives, skills, and experiences that each member of our community brings. Beyond our school walls, we believe that our society as a whole is strengthened when we center diversity, equity, and inclusion.
At Meekins, we are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where every child and family feels seen, valued, and respected. We celebrate the richness of our differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds. We strive to create a space where children of all identities and abilities feel a deep sense of belonging and where families are active participants in shaping a community that is reflective of the world around us.
We recognize that true inclusion requires ongoing learning, reflection, and action. As a play-based preschool, we incorporate diverse perspectives into our curriculum, ensuring that children see themselves and others reflected in books, activities, and classroom discussions. We actively work to remove barriers to participation, accommodate diverse learning needs, and provide a safe space where children can explore, grow, and express themselves authentically.
Through our collective efforts, we empower our students, families, and staff to become compassionate, confident, and engaged members of our interconnected world. At Meekins, diversity is not just acknowledged—it is celebrated, embraced, and woven into the heart of our community.
